Isla Vista Clinic

The recent  Common Ground Survey of Santa Barbara County that took place in May of 2011 contacted 87 unique homeless individuals in Isla Vista alone, which is most likely only a portion of the total number living there at any given time.  We aim to provide much needed to care to as many of these people as we can.  Although often slightly smaller than our other two clinics the Isla Vista clinic operates in the same way.  Several physicians, along with scribes, nurses, EMTs, and logistic personnel set up a clinic in Isla Vista where homeless can come to get free medical care.  We also provide other services including a social worker and hospitality items like socks, hygiene kits, and sunscreen.

A Unique Environment

Like with any environment, Isla Vista poses social and medical problems unique to the homeless population living there.  As a healthcare provider we do our best to treat these concerns.  The proximity to campus also gives us a chance to reach out to the college community in order promote the education of the next generation of humanitarians. We also aim to build a relationship between the UCSB population and the distinctly tight-knit community of Isla Vista homeless.

The Future

Currently the Isla Vista clinic operates every other Monday.  We would like to have this clinic run every week but due to operational and budgetary constants we are unable to do so.  In the near future we hope to expand in order to provide much needed care to the people living on the streets of Isla Vista.
